Counterfeiting and piracy in numbers
Counterfeiting and piracy of original products has become a global problem. At the World Economic Forum (WEF) in spring 2004, losses due to counterfeited goods were shown to be over US$ 400 billion annually.Swiss products are also targets of counterfeiting and copying. According to estimates published in the June 30, 2005 issue of the magazine CASH (pdf 460 KB), Swiss firms lose up to 2 billion francs annually from counterfeiting.
The increase of trade in counterfeited and pirated products is reflected in the customs authority's statistics: The number of cases in which they intervened because of suspicion of trademark or copyright infringement has increased over the past several years:
